Admissions Procedure
Our admissions procedure comprises 2 key criteria; that the young person wants to move into paid employment within 1-3 years, and have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). This is a document which details the educational, health and social care needs of a child or young person and sets out the provision required to meet those needs. Please visit the IPSEA website for further details.
We support young adults aged 16-25 on our two core programmes.
- Aged 16 – 25 (Pre-Internship)
- Aged 18 – 25 (Supported Internship)
NOTE: There are no minimum entry qualification requirements for Maths and English.

How do I apply for a place at Lighthouse Futures Trust?
We recommend that the first step is to attend one of our Open Days to see if you think Lighthouse Futures Trust is right for your young person. This will give you the opportunity to see the college site, meet some of the staff and get to know more about our programmes. Look out for upcoming Open Events on here – or get in touch here.
The next step would be to have a 1-1 meeting with one of our specialist team, where we can get into further detail. Don’t leave the visit too late, we suggest that parent/carers start looking from at least the year before they are planning to leave their current provision, if not sooner.
If, after the visit, we all think the College is the right place, then you need to make an application through the Local Authority SEN Statutory Assessment team (SENSAP) in whichever local authoirity area you live in. Whilst most of our students are from Leeds, we do also have students from West & North Yorkshire too. This would usually be done during the annual review of the young person’s EHC plan where you would name Lighthouse Futures Trust as your preferred placement.

What happens after I make a request?
The local authority will then send us a consultation (including the updated draft EHC plan), to see if we can meet the needs of the young person. We will usually ask you back in for a visit, unless you have been recently. If we feel we are the right provider, we will respond to the local authority to say we can meet need and their SENSAP team will take the place to panel, to gain agreement. If we feel we cannot meet need, we will inform the local authority, giving specific reasons, and they will discuss next steps with you.
Local Authority’s decision – It is important to remember that even if we can meet need, and have places available, the final decision rests with the Local Authority to decide where that young person will be placed. Their decision will then be written in Section I of the final EHC Plan.

Can I come and visit before I ask the Local Authority to consult with Lighthouse Futures Trust?
Yes, of course. We hold Open Days regularly throughout the year where we give presentations, offer you the chance to look round the college and speak to staff. To find out when the next event is, please head over to our events section where these will be listed. Alternatively, email info@lighthousefuturestrust.org.uk or ring us on 0113 340 0006
