6th May 2025: Bring it all Together – An Inclusive Music Festival

Project House – Friday 6 June 2025 – 6-11pm – Spectrum Festival

Join us for a festival of sensational music with a host of performers from Pulled Apart from Horses to old school house DJs and some exciting local talent thrown in too.

This is an inclusive event created by SEND settings across Leeds who want to bring live music to anyone and everyone who simply loves music. Whether you are a regular gig-goer or it’s your first time we will welcome you with open arms as our mission is to ‘bring it all together’!

Many young people with SEND want to experience going to gigs, clubs and bars. But at Spectrum we know that many of them feel they don’t have the confidence to do this alone and are worried that they would stand out. All this increases their anxieties around these social activities and lessens the chances of them going. Spectrum is a festival which is both supportive and authentic.

Spectrum has worked with SEND young people who have designed our brilliant logo, flyers, made merchandise to sell and supported with promo.

Line-up includes: Pulled Apart By Horses, Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip, Mr. Wilson’s Second Liners, Ultimate Thunder, Last Tourist and many more.

Tickets can be bought for £15 plus fees on the Dice website.

This is a 14+ venue. Under 18s to be accompanied by adults.

6th May 2025: Leeds Half Marathon

Adele will be taking part in the Leeds Half Marathon this Sunday as part of our new relationship with the team at Run For All. Come along and cheer her on!

23rd April 2025: Immersive Week

Immersive week saw our pre-interns at Headingley Heart Enterprise Centre, meeting neurodivergent fabricator and artist Emma Denby! Emma did an enthusiastic and exuberant meet-and-greet session all about her journey to becoming a freelance artist. Interns then had the chance to experiment and brainstorm ideas around the idea of self-growth and reflection.

Mike and Eleanor were so impressed by all of the questions interns asked Emma, as well as their engagement and focus throughout!

16th April 2025: Gardening Club comes to Carlton House

One of our Pre-Leads, Eleanor, will be putting on her gardening gloves after Easter to start her new weekly lunchtime gardening club for pre-interns. A chance to get outside and potter around in the garden at Carlton House, this club offers our pre-interns a break from the day-to-day of concentrating on honing their employability skills. See you all there!

15th April 2025: Read all about it!

4th April 2025: Recruitment Event – Date for your diary!

27th March 2025: Job success for Jim!

It’s not every day that we get a mention on one of our employer partner’s intranets, so we were delighted to read this:

Today we celebrate National Supported Internship Day and we’re thrilled to announce that Jim, who has been completing a supported internship with our team in Leeds, has been offered a full-time position! Jim has been an asset to our team and impressed us all during his interview, we couldn’t imagine a better person to greet visitors and represent our caring and inclusive team. Please join us in congratulating Jim!

Shockingly only 4.9% of people with learning disabilities are in work, supported internships help young people with additional needs make their first steps on their career path. We’ve been working with an amazing organisation in Leeds called Lighthouse Futures Trust for 8 years now, and during that time we’ve supported 10 individuals across the business. We have now employed two after successful completion of their supported internships.

Lighthouse Futures Trust are ten years old this year and have in that time supported nearly 300 young people into work. They do it all from a small but lovely base in Headingley, where a team of specialist education and employability professionals work with young people to help support their individual needs. They also offer extensive training and support to employers to ensure a successful placement that benefits everyone taking part in the programme.

If you are wondering if a supported internship could be good for your team, my answer is YES!!

27th March 2025: National Supported Internship Day

We’re really pleased to announce, and especially today on National Supported Internship Day, that some of our supported interns have already been successful in securing paid employment. Having impressed their colleagues so much and gone through the application and interview process, some are now working away as paid employees at their workplaces. Plus, they have the benefit of a job coach with them whilst they transition into work. Congratulations all, truly well deserved!

21st March 2025: Bringing home a trophy!

Adele and Danielle were treated to a fantastic meal and award ceremony at Doncaster Rovers last night where they were delighted to also receive the Social Enterprise Yorkshire & Humber (SEYH) award in the Social Investment category. Come and see our lovely award in Reception when you next pop in!

Pre-Interns visit Sodexo at Fortrea

Last week, some of our pre-interns were able to visit their colleagues in their workplace to interview them on what life is like for a supported intern. They met three of our SIs who are working for Sodexo, based at Fortrea in Leeds, within the hospitality, catering and housekeeping teams.

Not only did the visit give the pre-interns chance to ask questions of their peers, but it also gave them a valuable insight into a workplace, being able to see our SIs at work with their work buddies. Fortrea’s building is quite special and being invited in to work amongst teams there seemed like a great opportunity to our future interns.

Sodexo have invested time in the development of all of the current Lighthouse Futures Trust supported interns and they are all going from strength to strength. For the Pres to be able to see this and hear stories first-hand also gave them a greater understanding of what can be achieved through a supported internship.

24th February 2025
The Shed Woodwork Sessions

One of our Pre-internship groups attended their first session at The Shed in Horsforth this afternoon where they will be making their own boxes. They began by listening to Health & Safety from Peter and put on their PPE (aprons).

They then went into the workshop to watch demonstrations about how to safely use the equipment e.g. sawing, using a vice etc. Interns measured their bits of pine and practiced sawing.

There was a tea break, giving interns time to chat and socialise with each other – they each shared a joke and had a good laugh. And they even washed up afterwards!

13th February 2025: Leeds Apprenticeship Recruitment Fair

Our team were out at Leeds arena yesterday for the annual Leeds Apprenticeship Recruitment Fair. Our interns were able to visit stalls from recruiters across the city, but also able to help out on our stand. We spoke to lots of people about supported internships too and we hope to see some familiar faces at our upcoming open events.

Pre 2 visit Yorkshire Water

The Pre 2’s visited Yorkshire Water last week – they learned about the different careers that Yorkshire Water have including IT, engineers, conservation, customer service and many more. They have internships, apprenticeships and graduate programmes too.
The group learnt about wastewater and treatment works, reservoirs, rivers and boreholes. They learnt how the water is treated and the process it goes through before reaching our taps.

The Yorkshire Water staff explained the different bacteria or ‘baddies’ in the water and how each part of the process helps to remove them. They had a tour of the treatment works after this and were able to see what they had learnt in action.

Each intern was geared up in PPE and given earphones to hear as we walked around the works, pointing out different parts of the process, explaining hazard signs, discussing the careers involved in different areas, and overall ensuring the interns were safe and enjoying it.

In a poll at the end of the trip, every intern said they learnt something new and would try to be more aware of water usage going forward.

Clubs

One of the things that makes Lighthouse Futures Trust special is our series of free clubs that help interns work on their social skills, and relax after a day at work. We’re looking forward to introducing a new series of clubs this term, which we will further develop over the coming months to add extras from September. We can’t wait to get started, and visiting our clubs partners at Heart, The Music House, We Are Wellness, Bowery and Shire Oak Primary School. Malham Cove

Our Pre-Interns had a brilliant day out at Malham Cove with the team from Yorkshire Dales National Park. As well as walking from the village up to the cove, the interns were treated to a clay session in the visitors centre.

The visit was also part of our independent travel work, following on from the trip to York the previous week.

ASDA Leadership Programme

Our Pre-Interns have been visiting Asda to meet their business mentor this week as part of a wider leadership programme they’re taking part in. As well as taking part in lots of team building activities such as:

  • the string circle: working together to stay in the circle that got smaller each round
  • discussions about equality, diversity and inclusion and sharing our findings with the other colleges
  • writing down why equality is important onto hands stuck on the wall
  • upcycling task: creating a new product from a plastic water bottle
  • with their mentor focusing on six causes to pitch to Asda to support them in increasing sustainability
  • presenting on stage in front of the other colleges and received feedback from Asda experts!

Pre-Interns turn pizza chefs

We visited Headingley’s Pizza Express this morning to make some amazing cheesy pizzas. Each intern was given a ball of dough that they then had to press out, flip between their hands to remove flour, press into the tin, and finally add tomato passata, cheese and herbs. Whilst the chef cooked their pizzas, they participated in a quiz, learning that there are 7500 different varieties of tomatoes, and each passata tin that Pizza Express uses is made from 156 tomatoes and comes from Italy.

The staff were also brilliant at answering all of our intern’s career-related questions. Thanks to the whole team at Pizza Express for making the session possible.

Leeds Creative Skills Festival 2024

Our Pre-Interns visited the Leeds Creative Skills Festival to find out more about roles in the creative industry and the skills needed for those positions. Held at the Royal Armouries, it was also the perfect time for a quick tour of the museum!

Healthy Sustainable Living at ROOTS

Our Pre-Interns had a fabulous time getting their hands dirty in the Roots No Dig No Chemicals Allotments. We helped the patch manager pull some veg. We pulled some carrots, parsnips, beetroots, and leeks that the patch manager will be using to make a casserole for his tea!

We had a roam around, learning about why no-dig allotments are needed to increase biodiversity and why allotments are more sustainable than shopping in the supermarket – less packaging, less waste (only pick what you need), less travel and food miles, and less cost but much better tasting food!

We then got the chance to use the tools to plant some garlic. The patch manager encouraged everyone to join in, and as a team, we planted a whole row of garlic. We will be going back to pick the garlic once it’s grown and making some garlic bread.

He also mentioned the wildlife and animals, telling us that there are red kites, kestrels, deers, rabbits, owls, amongst many more that visit the allotment… however, not all are given the friendly welcome that we received, especially the rabbits who tend to steal peoples’ greens!

Student Report: Sustainable Travel by RS

This morning we took part in a webinar about Tech for Sustainable Transport and careers in this industry.

The reason why sustainable transport is crucial is because it reduces the amount of pollutants released into the atmosphere. We can achieve a healthier planet with solutions like electric vehicles because they are sustainable and have a smaller negative impact on our planet’s life, unlike petrol and diesel which have a large negative impact on our planet’s life because they are non-renewable. We looked at things such as EV’s, Biofuels, Hydrogen powered transport and green careers. We did this because it is Green Careers Week. I learnt that the first electric car was invented in 1888 and that there are lots of jobs that are Green! #JoinTheFight #GoGreen #TechSheCan

It's not all work, work, work!

23rd October 2024

Students on our Associates programme had a visit from the William Merritt Centre team this week. They brought one of their modified vehicles with them and some of our students were able to have a go (with thanks to The Gym Group letting us use their empty car park!) A lot of our young people have their provisional license, and they were pleased to learn about the options available to them when they have learned to drive.

Students visit Carlton House

18th October 2024

One of our past interns that now works at Lighthouse, tells us about a school visit:

“On Friday 18th October, three schools came to Lighthouse: John Jamieson, Roger Cannon, and Temple Moor, in total 20 students. It was a good morning, and I explained about my experience at Lighthouse. I also played some board games with them and showed them where they were going to their activities. They all had loads of questions to ask and were engaged with activities.”

Supported by People's Postcode Lottery

 4th October 2024

Lighthouse Futures Trust was really lucky to be supported by the players of People’s Postcode Lottery to be able to move into our new premises at Carlton House in Headingley, Leeds. This new building gives our young people experience of being in an environment that’s totally different from school and more in line with what they’d expect in a workplace.

Wakefield SEND Careers Fair

Tuesday 1st October 2024

We had a great day meeting so many young people, their families, schools and other organisations at the Wakefield SEND Careers Fair this week. Great to see such a choice of provision for young people in and around Wakefield.
