Job Search Tips

  • Keep your CV up to date and add any training or experience that you have had.
  • Show your positive, adaptable and problem-solving qualities.
  • Try to tailor each application to match your skills, experience, qualifications and personal qualities to the role you are applying for.
  • If you are applying for a role you have not done before, ensure that you highlight your transferable skills.
  • Networking – not all jobs are advertised and the more people who know about your situation, the more opportunities could come your way.
  • Consider temporary roles. They can sometimes lead to permanent roles.

Job Searching

Treat looking for a job like a job. Allocate a specific time during the day to job search. Check your emails for any responses from potential employers in the morning and/or late afternoon. Confirm your acceptance to attend an interview as soon as possible, don’t leave it to the last minute. Make a note of the jobs that you have applied for. Aim to apply for at least two jobs a day. The more jobs you apply for the higher the possibility of being invited to an interview and then being offered a job.

Most vacancies are advertised online. These will be on the Government’s Find a Job service, jobs boards, employer websites, through recruitment agencies and increasingly through social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.

Vacancies can also be advertised through job fairs (see below). In addition to advertising their jobs online, some employers recruit through word of mouth so it is important to let your friends, family and contacts know that you are available for work. Job Fairs & Reverse Job Fairs

Job Fair: A job fair is an event that employers and recruiters attend to find qualified staff to fill their company’s job roles. Job seekers attend job fairs to learn more about available roles in different industries and fields. Other organisations hold job fairs for community members and local businesses to attend. Job fairs are a great place to meet a mix of job seekers and learn about their backgrounds, skills and qualifications to determine if they are a good fit for your company.

Reverse Job Fair: A reverse job fair flips the traditional job fair model—instead of job seekers visiting employer booths, job seekers set up booths, and employers circulate to find talent. It’s particularly effective for showcasing skills and portfolios, such as tech, creative fields, and skilled trades.

Job Searching Websites

There are many different job searching websites; see our Job Search Website List. You can set up job search alerts so that you are notified when certain roles you are interested in are advertised.

Agencies are employed by businesses to find staff. Many roles are temporary, but don’t let this put you off: some start off as temporary and become permanent. Here is a list of agencies you might consider contacting:

Social Media

Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are increasingly being used by employers to advertise vacancies. While you do not necessarily need to register an account on services such as Facebook and Twitter to see vacancy details, registering will minimise any technical issues in viewing the vacancy information. You will need to be registered with LinkedIn to see the vacancies posted by employers and recruitment agencies on this service.
